DVM Student Externship

Are you a DVM student/Resident/Intern looking for a placement? We hope you will consider King Animal Hospital for your externship!

At King Animal Hospital, we are committed to being a centre for knowledge exchange, and students are a key part of this mission. With our broad range of specialties and state-of-the-art equipment, this is an excellent environment for students to learn and grow into dedicated and compassionate veterinary professionals.

We are introducing an externship program for individuals in their clinical years of education, offered on an as-available basis.

In some services, we also accommodate interns and residents. Due to limited spots, 4th-year OVC students are given priority, but other years or schools DVM students may be eligible on a department-by-department basis.

Bookings are typically made 3 months to 1 year in advance of the requested date, depending on the desired service and the doctors’ schedules.

Departments currently accepting DVM externships:

• Small Animal Services: Anesthesia and Pain Clinic; Cardiology; Dermatology (Limited availability for 2026, no availability 2027); Emergency; Neurology; Rehabilitation; Shelter Medicine

Services currently not offering externships:

Internal Medicine, Small Animal Surgery, Ophthalmology, Critical Care, Oncology, and Diagnostic Imaging.

• Your available dates, based on your program
• Your status/clinical year at the time of the requested dates, and the program you are enrolled in
• The specialties at King Animal Hospital you are most interested in, including which departments are your top priorities
• Any additional program requirements we should be aware of
• For non-OVC students: additional documents may be required, including but not limited to proof of health insurance, proof of English proficiency, a letter from the Dean, visa status in Canada, and others.
