Chief Medical Officer, Small Animal
King Animal Hospital is seeking to welcome a highly skilled Chief Medical Officer to our team!
In this role the CMO will provide strategic medical, ethical, operational, and cultural leadership of the small animal specialty referral and emergency services divisions.
Your leadership, medical and operational expertise will help guide King Animal Hospital to success in achieving its goal of creating a special hospital centred on excellent evidence-based medicine, compassionate patient care, and a positive employee culture focused on wellness, coaching and growth, sharing knowledge and giving back to the community.
The ideal candidate will be a Board-Certified Specialist with strong leadership skills and professional acumen. The role would ideally be a hybrid role with dedicated time for CMO duties one day per week and the remainder of the time would be serving in your specialty role on the floor.
The Hospital
King Animal Hospital is a 60,000 sq ft. Small Animal & Equine Specialty Referral and Emergency Services Hospital located on fifty acres in King City, Ontario. This hospital will never sell to a corporation.
This is the first phase of three phases in the hospital development. We are continuing to expand services and grow. Our first 60,000 sq ft phase will open this Fall 2023.

Our diagnostics and equipment include:
- 3 T (GE) MRI, 1.5 (Siemens) MRI, 128 slice CT scan, Standing CT scan with Robotic arm, Ultrasound, Digital Radiography, Hyperbaric Chamber, Laser Therapy, Hydrotherapy Water Treadmills for equine and small animal,
- Eight (8) operating rooms, twelve (12) treatment rooms, two (2) Xray rooms, two (2) Comfort Rooms, Learning Centre, 6,000 sq ft Indoor Equine Arena, MDRD room, Corporate Gym and Lounge Areas.
The Position:
You will report to the CEO who has an excellent reputation for developing strong and positive corporate cultures. Additionally, our leadership team support will include a CMO, Equine, Controller, Head of Human Resources, Head of Marketing, Senior Manager of Facilities Services, IT Manager, Client Services Manager, and RVT Leads.
In this role you will provide leadership to all staff in the small animal specialty and emergency departments. The specialty departments will include Surgery, Neurology, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Oncology, Rehabilitation, Critical Care, Anesthesia and Analgesia.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and direction for the medical department.
- Develop and implement medical policies, protocols, and procedures to ensure the highest standard of care for all animals.
- Collaborate with all departments to optimize operational efficiency, patient flow, and client satisfaction.
- Develop and implement medical protocols and standards to ensure the delivery of high-quality veterinary care.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements, including licensing, accreditation, and medical record-keeping.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in veterinary medicine and ensure the incorporation of evidence-based practices.
- Collaborate with the executive team to develop and execute strategic plans, budgets, and revenue generation strategies.
- In collaboration with the Head of Human Resources oversee the recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing training of veterinary professionals to maintain a highly skilled and motivated team.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development among veterinary staff.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of veterinary staff, providing regular feedback and implementing performance improvement initiatives.
- Provide input to the procurement and management of medical supplies, equipment, and pharmaceuticals and oversight of medical supplies, equipment, and pharmaceuticals, ensuring adequate inventory levels and adherence to safety protocols.
- Sharing knowledge and giving back to our communities with the purpose of improving animal welfare.
- Collaborate with leadership team to manage client complaints involving specialty services including interaction with the clients, record review, recommendations for corrective action if warranted, coaching of involved parties.

Our diagnostic capabilities include: a 3T MRI (GE) for small animal patients, a 1.5 MRI (Siemens) for equine patients, CT-Scan with a robotic arm for equine (Universal Medical System), CT scan for small animal (GE128 slice), C-arm, ultrasound (Logic Q), video endoscopes, rigid scopes, laparoscopy/arthroscopy towers (Storz/Arthrex), I-Stat and Radiometer, 7 Force Triad vessel sealing units, Arthrex and Synthes TPLO and plate fixation, Biomedtrix I-loc fracture fixation and total hip replacements, high flow oxygen and mechanical ventilation, ECG, VCM for Viscoelastic Coagulation
To further aid in surgical outcomes, we have a well-equipped rehabilitation center catering to both equine and small animal patients. This center includes three canine hydrotherapy treadmills, a regular canine treadmill, an equine hydrotherapy treadmill, a canine rehabilitation pool, laser therapy (Companion Class IV), a 6000-square-foot indoor equine ring, and a hyperbaric chamber.
We are one of only two veterinary hospitals in Canada to house a Hyperbaric Chamber (Sechrist Veterinary). Additionally, we have access to Laser Therapy, an in-house IDEXX lab, and Cubex for Pharmaceuticals.

Job Responsibilities:
- Reporting to CMO, work with a team of 8 to 10 DVMs. Strong RVT & ACA Support.
- Collaborate closely with Board Certified Critical Care Specialists, Anesthesiologists, and Referral Specialties to ensure comprehensive patient care and optimal outcomes.
- Participate in surgical procedures and receive training from our Board-Certified Surgeons.
- Deliver exceptional emergency veterinary care, including diagnosis, treatment, and surgical interventions.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team including surgery, anesthesia, neurologists, internal medicine, critical care, dermatology, ophthalmology, and rehabilitation to develop and achieve departmental goals and objectives.

Qualifications:

About You & How to Apply

Duties:
- Diagnose and treat animals with cardiac diseases, including congenital and acquired heart conditions;
- Perform comprehensive cardiac examinations, including auscultation, echocardiography, electrocardiography, and radiography;
- Interpret diagnostic tests and imaging results to make accurate diagnoses and develop appropriate treatment plans;
- Perform and interpret cardiac Doppler studies, blood pressure monitoring, and exercise tolerance tests;
- Collaborate with the primary care veterinarian and other specialists to provide integrated and comprehensive care for patients;
- Consult with referring veterinarians to offer expert advice on cardiac cases and provide recommendations for optimal patient management;
- Perform advanced cardiac procedures such as cardiac catheterization, pacemaker implantation, and open-heart surgery, if applicable and within your scope of expertise;
- Prescribe and manage cardiac medications and develop individualized treatment plans for patients;
- Provide compassionate and empathetic care to patients and their owners, communicating diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis effectively;
- Maintain accurate and detailed medical records and ensure timely documentation of all patient-related activities;
- Stay up to date with advancements in veterinary cardiology by attending conferences, workshops, and engaging in continuous professional development;
- Contribute to the advancement of veterinary cardiology through research, publishing scientific papers, and participating in clinical trials, if applicable.
Requirements:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent is required
- Completion of a formal residency program in cardiology accredited by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) or other recognized veterinary specialty board is required
- Board certification or eligibility for board certification in cardiology by ACVIM or other recognized specialty board is required
- Provincial licensing in Ontario from the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO) is required or ability to obtain
- 3+ years of experience as a practicing boarded Cardiologist
- Demonstrated expertise in cardiac diagnostics, including echocardiography, electrocardiography, radiography, and cardiac Doppler studies
- Proven experience in interpreting and analyzing diagnostic test results
- Proficiency in performing advanced cardiac procedures such as cardiac catheterization and pacemaker implantation
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues and educate pet owners about cardiac conditions and treatment options
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to maintain accurate medical records
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with the latest advancements in veterinary cardiology
